BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Fluid biomarkers have the potential to improve the accuracy of diagnosis and prognosis in children with mild traumatic brain injury. Our primary objective was to assess the diagnostic and prognostic utility of acute blood and fluid biomarkers in children with mild traumatic brain injury. METHODS: We performed a systematic review of the published literature in accordance with Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) methodology. Fluid biomarker studies assessing pediatric mild traumatic brain injury diagnosis or prognosis were included if blood or fluids were sampled within 24 h of injury. RESULTS: Thirty-two studies involving 4743 patients were included comprising 25 diagnostic studies and ten prognostic studies with three studies assessing both diagnosis and prognosis. Sixteen of the 25 diagnostic studies reported the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC) for predicting abnormal computed tomography scans of the head; S100 calcium binding protein B (S100B, N = 6 studies, AUC range 0.67-1.00), glial fibrillary acidic protein (N = 5, AUC range 0.41-0.85), ubiquitin C-terminal hydrolase (N = 3, AUC 0.59 and 0.83), neuron specific enolase (N = 1, AUC 0.99), total tau (N = 1, AUC 0.65), and interleukin-6 (N = 1, AUC 0.61). In four of the ten prognostic studies, increased acute serum S100B levels, tumor necrosis factor-α, or interleukin-8 were associated with post-concussive symptoms or fatigue from 3 to 12 months post-injury. CONCLUSIONS: The largest amount of evidence supported the potential use of S100B, glial fibrillary acidic protein, and UCH-L1, but there was mixed accuracy for diagnosis and prognostication for all biomarkers in pediatric mTBI.

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this scoping review is to review the available information on objective performance metrics used during robotic neuroendovascular intervention procedures on humans. INTRODUCTION: Robotic neuroendovascular intervention is defined as any endovascular procedure within the vasculature of the central nervous system with the assistance of a robotic system for diagnostic or therapeutic procedures. Robotic systems are described as a 2-component system consisting of a patient-side mechanical robot, and a separate operator control station. Robotic neuroendovascular intervention is a growing field and there is a need to establish objective performance metrics for furthering evidence-based reporting of the literature. INCLUSION CRITERIA: This scoping review will consider all studies involving humans that utilize robotic neuroendovascular intervention. We will consider all types of studies, reports, and reviews as well as gray literature. Studies will be included if they describe the use of an objective performance metric during robotic neuroendovascular intervention. This review is not limited to a particular country or health care system, and will consider all study designs, regardless of their rigor or language. METHODS: Utilizing a 3-step framework as a guide, we will perform a systematic search in Embase, Cochrane Library, and MEDLINE. Available literature from inception to the present will be considered. Studies will be independently screened according to the inclusion criteria by 2 reviewers based on title, abstract, and full text. Data will be extracted, sorted, and presented in both a narrative summary as well as table and diagram based on the objective of the scoping review.

BACKGROUND: Neurotrauma accounts for over 24,000 hospitalizations annually in Canada and has a significant impact in many developed countries. Among those affected, indigenous peoples are disproportionately impacted. The present scoping review explores the factors contributing to neurotrauma in indigenous populations and potential strategies to address this health care issue at a global level. METHODS: A search was performed in Medline (1974-2021) and Embase (1946-2021) to identify studies pertaining to neurotrauma in indigenous populations of Canada. Search terms included 'Aboriginal', 'First Nation', 'Indigenous', 'traumatic brain injury', and 'traumatic spine injury'. Thematic analysis was then used to synthesize the information collected. A gray literature search was also performed. RESULTS: The original literature search yielded 1609 articles, with 17 selected for the scoping review. Through thematic analysis, the factors contributing to neurotrauma burden in indigenous populations of Canada were summarized into 3 themes: inadequate resources available, social problems in indigenous communities, and challenges within the health care system. The potential strategies to address neurotrauma were also summarized into 3 themes: system-level changes to Canadian health care, community-based initiatives, and culturally appropriate solutions. The gray literature search revealed a lack of government reports on the topic and notable advocacy work from community organizations. CONCLUSIONS: Systems-level interventions guided by indigenous community members will help to address the disparities that indigenous peoples face in the care and rehabilitation of neurotrauma. This study will inform further research of culturally appropriate approaches to reduce neurotrauma among indigenous peoples at a global level.
